As a luxury travel advisor, I spend my days designing incredible itineraries for families around the world. But every once in a while, I get to step away from my computer, experience a destination firsthand, and come home with a whole new perspective.

This summer, my family and I traveled through Iceland, Scotland, and London, and it reminded me exactly why I love planning journeys like this for our clients.

Each destination was completely different from the last. Iceland amazed us with its raw natural beauty. Scotland immersed us in history, luxury, and world class golf. London delivered iconic landmarks and unforgettable moments that brought history to life for our children.

Looking back, I honestly can't imagine experiencing one without the others.

Iceland Completely Surprised Me

We began our journey in Reykjavík, staying at The Reykjavík EDITION, which was the perfect home base for exploring southern Iceland.

I expected dramatic scenery. What I didn't expect was how fascinated our entire family would become by Iceland's geology.

One day we were whale watching and spotting puffins along the coastline. The next, we were descending into the chamber of an ancient volcano. Standing inside a volcano is one of those experiences that's almost impossible to describe until you've done it. It feels otherworldly.

We also hiked on a glacier, explored black sand beaches, and stopped at waterfall after waterfall, each somehow more beautiful than the last.

One thing I kept saying throughout the trip was that parts of Iceland reminded me of Hawaii, especially the lush cliffs covered in waterfalls along the south coast. But Iceland has an entirely different personality. Knowing you're standing where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet makes every landscape feel even more extraordinary.

If your family enjoys adventure, nature, and experiences that spark curiosity, Iceland is one of the most rewarding destinations I've ever visited.

Scotland Was Even Better Than I Expected

Our next stop was Scotland, and while I knew I'd love it, I don't think I realized just how much.

We started in St Andrews, staying at Rusacks St Andrews, overlooking the famous Old Course.

Even if you're not a golfer, there's something incredibly special about walking through the birthplace of the game. For anyone hoping to play St Andrews, it's important to know that securing a tee time isn't easy. It's one of those experiences where having someone guide you through the process can make all the difference.

What surprised me most, though, was how much history is packed into such a small town. Between the university where Prince William and Princess Catherine met, the castle ruins, and the centuries old streets, there is so much to discover beyond golf.

From there we continued to Gleneagles, and I finally understood why so many travelers rave about it.

The service was exceptional, but what really stood out was how effortlessly the resort works for every age. The adults could relax while the kids had endless activities, making it one of my favorite luxury resorts for multigenerational families.

We finished our time in Edinburgh, wandering its historic streets, exploring its castles, and constantly finding ourselves saying, "I can't believe how much history is here."

If you appreciate luxury hotels, incredible golf, rich culture, and destinations that invite you to slow down, Scotland is somewhere I would recommend again and again.

London Never Gets Old

Our final stop was London.

As someone who has spent a great deal of time there over the years, I still love watching people experience London for the first time.

We stayed at The Rubens at the Palace, overlooking the Royal Mews and just steps from Buckingham Palace.

One of my biggest takeaways from this visit was how important choosing the right neighborhood really is. Every area of London has its own personality, and where you stay has a huge impact on your overall experience.

One of my favorite moments was watching the Changing of the Guard through my children's eyes. It's easy to think of it as something touristy, but seeing it in person made British history feel real in a way books never could.

We spent time exploring Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, and the charming streets of Marylebone, which remains one of my favorite neighborhoods for shopping, cafés, and simply wandering.

London has an incredible way of balancing world famous landmarks with neighborhoods that feel intimate and local. That's one of the reasons I never get tired of recommending it.

Why These Three Destinations Work So Well Together

What made this itinerary so memorable wasn't just the destinations themselves.

It was the variety.

In just one trip, we experienced glaciers, volcanoes, castles, championship golf courses, royal traditions, charming villages, vibrant cities, and some of the most beautiful landscapes we've ever seen.

No two days felt the same.

Iceland challenged us to explore.

Scotland encouraged us to slow down.

London gave us energy and excitement before heading home.

Together, they created one of the most well balanced family journeys I've ever experienced.

What I'll Be Recommending to Clients

One of my favorite parts of traveling is coming home with ideas that make my clients' future trips even better.

After experiencing this itinerary firsthand, there are already little details I'll change, hotels I'll recommend with even greater confidence, and experiences I'll encourage families to prioritize.That's the value of working with a travel advisor who travels.

We're not simply reading about destinations. We're experiencing them ourselves, learning what works, what surprises us, and what creates those unforgettable moments you'll still be talking about years later.
